Compassion in Action: Mohanji and the Divine Exchange of Pain

by Subhasree Thottungal, UK

There are countless instances where I’ve witnessed Mohanji taking on physical pain to relieve the suffering of others. Sometimes, I see these unfold before my eyes; sometimes, I receive confirmation through Mai-Tri, and at times, the truth is revealed through other sources. One such profound experience unfolded recently, and I feel compelled to share it.

I was with Mohanji in Ganeshpuri for the land consecration event on June 5th and 6th. On the evening of the 5th, Mohanji hosted an informal satsang with all the devotees who had gathered for the occasion. Later that night, he casually mentioned a discomfort around his left ear. I didn’t think much of it at the time.

The next morning, however, we noticed visible swelling on the left side of his face, from the ear downward. I assumed it might be an ear infection, and Mohanji said he would start an antibiotic. Despite this, he carried out all the event rituals with complete grace, showing no sign of discomfort.

After lunch that day, as he was meeting people who were leaving, I, too, went to see him before departing for Bhubaneswar. I noticed that the swelling had worsened, and his ear was inflamed. He told me his head was thumping with pain. With his permission, I offered Mai-Tri to the affected area. Without touching his skin due to the inflammation, I held my palm slightly above his ear. I could feel intense heat — it felt like my palm was burning from a thousand red-hot chillies. Mohanji remarked, “My ear is like a furnace!”

I focused the session on relieving his pain and then left for Mumbai to catch my flight. Before boarding, I checked on him again. The swelling persisted, and I could sense his discomfort. I began another Mai-Tri session on the flight, and during it, I saw an image of paralysis. I felt that Mohanji had taken this condition upon himself, perhaps from many people.

I also saw a deep sadness in his heart, a sense of sorrow rooted in a lack of love and care. I wondered — who had he saved from a paralytic stroke? The thought of Dolf came to me. He had recently suffered a stroke, and I felt almost certain that Mohanji had absorbed a part of that condition to protect him.

That night, I didn’t write to Mohanji — it was pretty late. But the next morning, on June 7th, I messaged him about the insights. He then shared that the left side of his face had gone numb. He was on his way to Mumbai for a meeting and then to Bangalore. I requested him to see a doctor, but for Mohanji, the scheduled meeting took precedence.

Still feeling uneasy due to the severity of the Mai-Tri insights, I was relieved to later learn that he did manage to consult a doctor in Mumbai before flying to Bangalore.

Meanwhile, I had travelled to Puri with my parents. That day, on the 7th June, I conducted a Group Mai-Tri session organized by the MPC Croatia team. After the session, Michael, one of the participants, contacted me with feedback. He mentioned that his wife Jenny was away at her mother’s, who had suffered a sudden brain stroke on Thursday and was rushed to A&E. Miraculously, she survived and escaped facial paralysis, and by Friday, she was discharged.

Hearing this and correlating the timing, I felt a strong connection. I realized she, too, could have been one of the people Mohanji had protected by taking it upon himself.

Later in the evening, as I messaged Mohanji again, I learned that he would visit the hospital in Bangalore right after landing. As this was unfolding, I was also on my way to the Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri with my parents.

We entered the temple through Paschim Dwar (the west gate), where there’s a Hanuman temple renowned for hearing prayers whispered directly into his ears. For the first time, I truly noticed this and whispered a prayer for Mohanji.

Then, we proceeded toward the elevated Narasimha temple. Normally, it’s crowded and difficult to see the idol, but that night, it was visible — the priest was performing arati. I was able to go up and place a sankalpa in Mohanji’s name, and the priest offered prayers on his behalf.

Despite the massive crowds — possibly a few lakhs of people — I managed to visit the Bimala temple, the Shakti temple. There was no crowd at all. I had clear darshan and offered heartfelt prayers.

Next, I went to the Maha Lakshmi temple, and again, incredibly, there was no crowd. Maa Lakshmi was being prepared for the night. She looked stunning. I sat quietly in the inner sanctum and prayed for Mohanji.

Then, I came down to the courtyard towards the entrance to the inner temple of Shree Jagannatha. There, I lit lamps in front of Sudarshana Chakra and prayed for the Lord’s protection. At that moment, I noticed the flag — it was the white one, just like the one Mohanji had offered during his first visit to the temple in January 2022.

The crowd never reduced. We stayed there until nearly midnight. While my parents sat comfortably, I continued offering Mai-Tri to Mohanji and many others who had requested it earlier. Eventually, we had Maha Prasad and returned home. We had been in the temple for over four to four and a half hours.

Although Shree Jagannatha did not grant us his darshan that night, I was given miraculous opportunities — special prayers and clear darshan at the Narasimha, Bimala, and Maha Lakshmi temples. I had the privilege of sitting under the protective gaze of the Sudarshana Chakra and offering my prayers. Since I had no mobile phone with me inside the temple, I didn’t know what was happening with Mohanji at the Bangalore hospital. But I felt deeply that all these signs were divine indications. While Mohanji was in the hospital, I was in Shree Mandir. This wasn’t just a coincidence.

The next morning, on 8th June, Mohanji informed that the previous night, he had been admitted to the hospital and given IV fluids and injections. That’s when I understood — Shree Jagannatha didn’t give us darshan the previous night because, Jagannatha himself was in the emergency ward that night!

To me, Mohanji is none other than Shree Jagannatha.

I came to know that the diagnosis was Bell’s Palsy — a condition of partial facial paralysis, thankfully not caused by a brain stroke, but perhaps a viral infection or fatigue. Mohanji has often said that he prefers to take on heavy karmic loads in his body and transmute them in a reduced, manageable form. What could have been a massive issue — a brain stroke — was instead taken as Bell’s Palsy.

This may have been intended for Dolf, Jenny’s mother, or even for many others we are not aware of. However, it was clear that the divine was protecting Mohanji — and the signs were evident through the temple deities that night.

Later that evening at 5pm, it was the scheduled weekly Talk session with Mohanji. I messaged Mohanji asking if we should postpone this weekly Zoom session. He replied, “No change. The show must go on with or without Mohanji. Be yourself. Lead the show which I guide.”

The session began. When Mohanji appeared on screen, everyone was stunned seeing the condition of his face. He calmly explained the situation, brushing it off in his usual humble way. Many participants suggested he cancel the session and rest. But Mohanji said, “For me, REST = RUST.”

He continued the session with complete dedication. Though there was visible discomfort — a watering eye, facial strain — he answered every question with clarity and depth. After an hour, the participants stopped asking questions. We ended the session with group chanting for Mohanji’s well-being, followed by a powerful video of Mohanji from the Empowered program.

Before closing, I briefly narrated what had transpired in the last couple of days. After hearing this, Runa — the priest and caretaker from MCB USA — messaged me. She shared that the wife of one of their key workers had undergone critical surgery on Thursday and Friday for cancer in her ear. She had just been discharged.

Runa was stunned to hear how my palm had burned from the heat near Mohanji’s ear. All this had been happening at the same time in the USA. The woman didn’t know Mohanji personally, but he still took on her pain.

This is Mohanji — compassion incarnate. He asks for nothing yet gives everything. He silently takes on pain, karmic baggage, and suffering — even of those who don’t know him. Unconditional love is his only agenda.

While devotees around the world pray and chant for his recovery, Mohanji quietly continues his mission. My head bows in reverence at the feet of this living Master, whom we are blessed to know as Mohanji.

Mohanji-pain

After the above blog was published, we received a touching story from Deepa Nair.

Sometimes, words fail to express our feelings.

Yesterday, upon hearing about Mohanji’s illness, we performed a group Maha Mrithyunjaya chanting for Mohanji, and the love and concern of our family members deeply moved me. Today, many of them went to the nearby Siva temple to do Abhishek and pray for Mohanji’s speedy recovery.

Two days ago, I was communicating with Mohanji, and I noticed that Mohanji was only sending text messages in response to my voice notes. I felt like asking it but assumed that he must be in some function. Today, after reading Subhasree’s message, I was moved by Mohanji’s dedication to this divine mission. Mohanji is silently taking on other people’s pain while giving instructions to fulfil our duties.

I shared Subhasree’s blog with our meditation group. After a while, a lady called me. She was a new member. She was crying and told me something really touching, and it left me speechless!

She first told me about her family. They are devotees of Sathya Sai Baba, and recently, she came across Mohanji’s picture and suddenly felt a connection with Baba. During the conversation, she told me about her elder daughter’s sickness. She had a nervous problem 20 years back, and it was cured due to Baba’s grace.

Recently, the daughter fell sick again, and she wanted to pray to Mohanji. I asked her to join the meditation group, where daily meditations, chanting, and prayers take place and assured her that Mohanji would take care of it.

Now, she was weeping uncontrollably and said amidst tears, “My daughter is cured of Bell’s palsy, but I came to know that Mohanji is suffering from it. I never prayed to Mohanji to take it to him. I was praying to Baba, but suddenly, I saw this new Guruleela Malayalam book named “Kindness Incarnate”. When I looked at his face. I saw Sathya Sai there and prayed for my daughter’s cure. This happened on June 2. Now I feel guilty.” The swelling in her daughter’s face has gone now. She is back to normal.

I was speechless and tried to console her. I bow with infinite gratitude to Mohanji.
