Beyond the Lab: How a Meditation Experience Reshaped My Understanding of Purpose

Kalpana Mewara from the USA shares the following with us:

There Are No Coincidences

Mohanji often reminds us that there are no coincidences in life. Everything that unfolds, every encounter, every experience, is part of a larger, interconnected design. Nothing is truly acquired by us; it is all given. What seems accidental is merely the visible tip of a much deeper karmic play.

The people we meet, family, friends, and acquaintances, are all connected to us through karmic threads woven by past actions and intentions. What may appear as a chance meeting or random event is the unfolding of destiny, shaped by choices made consciously or unconsciously. Every event, whether seemingly trivial or profoundly life-altering, carries within it the seeds of transformation and lessons for growth.

When my nephew, Harsh Mattoo, moved in with me for his summer internship, it felt unmistakably predestined. Though he is an engineer by profession, Harsh was open to exploring Mohanji’s teachings. Our weekends were often spent in meaningful discussions about life and spirituality, and he would frequently sit in my meditation/puja room, simply to quiet his mind.

One day, while he was helping me with some IT-related work, I invited him to experience the Power of Purity meditation. What followed was a powerful moment of stillness. I will allow his own words to speak for his experience, but I must add that he found it difficult to come out of the meditation. That speaks volumes.

Beyond the Lab: How a Meditation Experience Reshaped My Understanding of Purpose

Greetings Everyone!

I’m Harsh Mattoo. I come from the world of technology development and purpose-driven engineering. Originally a Mechatronics Engineer, I’ve shifted my focus to Ocean Engineering. Currently pursuing my PhD at Texas A&M, my academic and professional pursuits as an Ocean Engineer are dedicated to building a future where divers can remotely operate robots for all dangerous tasks, allowing them to work safely and sustainably.

I believe the lives of engineers, scientists, and all members of the STEM community are fundamentally lives of service. At its core, engineering, in my opinion, must be guided by a holistic approach to create a better, safer, cleaner, and more comfortable world.

As a 27-year-old, I’m still coming to fully understand spirituality; there’s so much the world and universe have yet to reveal. Yet, I firmly believe the universe always has something in store for us, teaching us lessons that, when truly understood, stay with us forever. This is how I think we evolve our worldview, with each experience unlocking a new perspective.

One such eye-opening experience for me was a simple exercise I did with my amazing aunt, Kalpana Mewara. While helping her organize online events and handle IT needs, we did the “Power of Purity” meditation. I learned this was one of Mohanji’s signature guided meditations, known for its powerful effect of cleansing and opening the heart. Here’s what I experienced as I delved into it-

Initially, during meditation, as I close my eyes and align my hands in Chin Mudra on my knees, I feel a slight warmth spreading through them. I then perceive a bright white light spinning rapidly in a circular pattern, with fine, slanted spikes projecting outwards, all while I take deep breaths.

Next, I catch a glimpse of my parents. My mother gently places her hand on my head, stroking it as if to tell me she’s there, assuring me I needn’t pay attention to life’s distractions or obstacles. Her presence urges me to move forward and charge ahead into the world on my mission.

Following this, I sense the presence of my grandfather, affectionately known as “Makhantot” in our family. I feel him standing behind me, observing. I see him, the man who inspired me and helped pave my path into the world of engineering, smiling.

Then, I envision my current university mentor. I see him, as he does in our university meetings, helping me understand the value of knowledge and our responsibility to contribute positively to the world. As I mentally thank all my mentors for their guidance, wisdom, and care, I realize how incredibly fortunate I am to have met them. I feel truly blessed to simply exist in this universe, having experienced and witnessed all the events in my life.

Right after this profound emotion of gratitude settles in my heart, a small, bright, white, diamond-shaped light emerges between my eyebrows. This shape suddenly expands, and I feel like an astronaut traveling at immense speed through space. The space itself is a deep dark indigo, while all other elements—which appear as asteroids, planets, or celestial bodies—are a brilliant violet.

The meditation concludes shortly after this. I remain entranced for a brief moment. Such an experience was entirely new to me; I felt as though I could have stayed in that meditative state indefinitely. I have no words to truly describe the emotions or feelings that arose during the meditation, as it felt like I entered a realm where I was observing myself from a third-person perspective.

However, after a minute or two, I felt fueled with an immense amount of energy, so much so that I simply didn’t feel like sitting down anymore. I felt empowered to approach my research with greater productivity, a feeling that was confirmed by an exceptionally productive day at work that followed.

That concludes my experience with the “Power of Purity” meditation. It was a profoundly enlightening and humbling journey, leading me to a significant realization: my accomplishments aren’t solely mine. Instead, they are blessings, shaped by every experience, every person I’ve encountered, every piece of guidance I’ve received, every colleague I’ve collaborated with, and every individual I’ve had the honor to serve.

As I wrap up this reflection, I’d like to share one final thought: we are all but small fish in a vast, unending ocean. There’s so much more to see, and we’ve truly just scratched the surface of understanding. And lastly, I would like to offer my deepest gratitude to Mohanji for sharing such a powerful yet enlightening meditation method with us all.

Thank You!
