Two years ago, I sent the following quote from Yoga Vasishtha to Mohanji:
The truly wise ones live as if they had various desires, and they laugh with the fools, though they themselves are wise. No one knows their inner peace and illumined state. Only wise ones know other wise men. The true men of wisdom do not expose their wisdom nor parade it to win the admiration of the masses. The latter are distractions in the eyes of the wise. ‘I wish everyone to know how good I am so that they may worship me’—such thoughts arise in the mind of the vain man, not of the wise one.
Following the quote, I said that it reminded me exactly of him.
Mohanji replied:
This is absolutely 100% true. You can circulate it as the sign of a true Master.
I never really did circulate it. So, better late than never…
Today, this quote feels more relevant than ever. I had an intuitive feeling to start attending Mohanji’s weekly satsangs. As I unfortunately have no sense of meaningful direction in life (whether spiritual or otherwise), I rely on intuition to guide me to such things. My favourite thing about the sessions is just the chance to be in Mohanji’s presence and to see him in action.
During the past two sessions, I have witnessed a growing harmonisation between what it means to see Mohanji ‘in action’ and the truths outlined in the quote I shared at the beginning of this article.
Mohanji is unbelievably subtle and unassuming. He is so subtle that sometimes he doesn’t appear like a Master at all. When questions are asked, he answers in the most economical way possible, and without any mystical overtones. His answers to questions don’t sound like the answers of a Master at all, but rather the replies of somebody who simply has a very high degree of common sense.
We typically imagine the answers of a Master to contain some degree of mystery, some sense of ‘something higher,’ but Mohanji’s words are simple, plain, and address only what is directly in front of him. Mohanji’s words leave absolutely no room to hide, and minimal space for the imagination to operate and distort what he is saying into something else.
This way of operating accomplishes a number of things simultaneously. Firstly, for those who are actually serious about transforming, he always delivers the solution. However, just because we ask a question, it doesn’t mean that we are actually interested in a solution, and it doesn’t mean that we are ready for the solution. Sometimes when we ask questions, we already have an answer in our head, and we would simply like this answer to be confirmed. If the Guru’s answer doesn’t correspond with our own, we may outwardly nod our heads in agreement with the Guru, kindly ignore what he has said, and then carry on our lives in line with our own answer. This seems like a great waste of time when you think about it.
Secondly, Mohanji’s way of answering questions separates the wheat from the chaff. The chaff in this case is people who are seeking Mohanji to directly reveal his higher ‘mystical’ knowledge, his clairvoyant knowledge of others’ thoughts, past/future lives, etc., or some kind of miraculous solution to a health problem or something else to do with employment or passing exams. This is cheap, fast-food spirituality, and Mohanji doesn’t serve it. In my own experience, and in the experience of a few people I know who are very deeply connected with Mohanji, he rarely reveals any of these things to people, and if he does, it is only when he knows that they are already connected to his essential being and not to his capacities.

Thus, Mohanji’s answers to these questions, which are of a common-sense variety, may discourage those who are seeking miracles and quick fixes. There are plenty of so-called Masters to choose from who will happily demonstrate their powers the first time people meet them in order to impress, flatter and hook people in. Mohanji doesn’t do any of this nonsense. With Mohanji, you have to spend time digging past the many layers of camouflage that he uses to appear as just an ordinary man.
When one is really with Mohanji, he will give everything to a person. He will be incredibly proactive in the transformational process of that person. When one has truly given themselves to Mohanji, they won’t even have to come to him. He will go to them. But this cannot be faked. A true Master knows where everybody’s heart really lies. Many people may be sitting in a physical or online space with a Master, but each of their minds may be somewhere completely different.
Overall, all of this is beautiful to watch, and I sometimes find myself laughing at Mohanji’s laconic replies to some questions that seem to be aimed at either receiving a miraculous solution or some sort of lofty philosophical answer.
It is one thing to read about the great rishis of yore in books like Yoga Vasishtha, but to see one in action is another matter entirely. And actually, it may perhaps be our notions that we have received from books and other second-hand sources that eventually blind us from recognising when a real Master is standing in front of us.
Many people say that they want enlightenment, but actually, many of them only want to realise their own personal ideas of enlightenment. Many people also say that they want a Guru, but they actually only want the Guru who is exactly the way that they have conveniently imagined him.
A real Guru is there to take us beyond ourselves. This will not be a comfortable journey. Why? Because all that we know is ourselves. Even if we were to travel to outer space, we would still be perceiving those far-flung regions through the prism of our own timeworn personality and ingrained patterns. The Guru is a corrosive force to all of these things. He helps us to erode our patterned sense of self from the inside out. Whether it happens fast or slow, this process is an evisceration of everything that we think we know. Mohanji is an absolute master at accomplishing this through the subtlest means possible. I believe that we don’t even see 1% of what he does. And he has no interest in telling us about the other 99%. Because how will it benefit us?
‘How will it benefit them?’ I believe that this is the selfless, silent question that underlines all of Mohanji’s dharmic work in this world. I think for most of us, myself included, it is simply very difficult to understand the actions of somebody who exists solely for others.
Mohanji is a lion of dharma. May I continue to follow as an ant in his lion footsteps!
