Sacred Fire, Spontaneous Laughter: A New Year Grace with Mohanji

by Mohanji Executive Team, India

After the powerful homa conducted by Mohanji at the beginning of the New Year 2026, so much was cleansed, leaving us all feeling lighter. Some of us participated by offering coconuts into the fire, while others simply watched—offering themselves mentally inwardly with surrender and love.

Mohanji, silently working in the background for all of us, later shared that everything had gone well. He started the homa, gave clear instructions on what to do when he stepped back, guided us throughout the homa with the right mantras to chant, and also offered the purnahuti (final offering to the fire). For over 2.5 hours, he remained fully focused on the sacred homa, ensuring everything went smoothly, and the job was completed to his satisfaction.

Later, he explained that the homa fire has its own language. You have to watch it to understand and communicate with the fire, and change the mantras as per the deities and energies present then. For example, we noticed that at the beginning, the fire was blown towards the North by the gentle wind, which signified that the offerings were accepted. Midway through the homa, there was a gentle drizzle – another auspicious sign indicating blessings. However, he firmly instructed us not to move an inch and to continue the homa even if the rain picked up – thankfully, it didn’t and tapered off after a while.

At one point, he guided us that Shiva-Shakti, Datta-Anaghalakshmi, and Sai Baba were all present at the same time, so he asked our group to chant all three mantras simultaneously. Towards the end, the wind shifted to the South-East, indicating completion. At that time, the fire formed a vortex, with black smoke rising, indicating that deep karmic matter was burning out completely. When the final offering (purnahuti) was submitted to the fire, there was a moment of deep stillness as everyone around the fire felt the lightness and the power of the ceremony. Two hours later, when we checked the homakunda, there was nothing left but ash. Everything had been consumed. A fresh start for 2026, with previous baggage burnt!

The day was long for Mohanji—sitting through the homa, interacting with participants, and responding to 600-plus New Year’s messages late into the night, continuing even into the next day.

In contrast, the following morning at breakfast, Mohanji was in a light, playful mood. He shared the story behind the large Sathya Sai Baba picture in the temple at his Ganeshpuri house. He explained that the picture was not particularly respected earlier and had arrived merely as part of packaging material from Dubai/Muscat. It was given away, yet somehow found its way back to Mohanji. With due respect, it was then framed and placed in the temple.

As breakfast was coming to a close, Mohanji’s eye caught a bunch of bananas that seemed to form the shape of a heart. In that joyful moment, he said, “I see things as nobody else sees them.” Indeed.

He called our in-house photographer, Djurđja, and asked her to take close-up shots of the bunch. Then the fun began—he gave playful instructions: add or remove an orange or a pomegranate, adjust the framing. Laughing, he said, “Put my hand towel over it—it will look like a heart with a turban!”  We obeyed, bursting into laughter.

Not stopping there, he suggested dressing it up like a woman with a veil. What followed was a hilarious, spontaneous photo shoot, with the MHouse media team fully engaged and everyone around laughing non-stop.

Through this simple, joyful moment, Mohanji gave us a profound insight: to live each moment in awareness, to seize opportunities to laugh, and to enjoy life. Through everyday life and the incidents that unfold in it, Mohanji demonstrates to us the true meaning of spirituality – serious work in the background, yet living every moment fully and cherishing every experience.

I was reminded of Mohanji’s quote, where he explained this beautifully :

“The currency of life, the money of life, is time. Experiences are our only earnings, expressions are our only expenses, and memories are our only bank balance. This is life. There’s nothing else.”
