Caught by Grace

by Shaju Mangalam, India

A real-life experience of divine grace!

In life, there are moments when the divine quietly steps in—between fate and existence—and reminds us of that unseen, protective force… the invisible hand that shields us from what could have been a fatal end, preserving us to continue this journey with gratitude and awareness.

Early this morning, in the stillness of the night, I had such an experience.

I was travelling by a sleeper bus, something I usually avoid—especially the upper berth. But urgency demanded it, and I chose that narrow space for the overnight journey. The berth was cramped, the safety support minimal, and being at the rear of the bus, every bump felt like being tossed in a relentless motion.

In the early hours, I woke up and tried to sit up. There wasn’t enough space—my head struck the roof. As I struggled to adjust, the bus suddenly took a sharp turn. In that instant, I lost control. With nothing to hold on to, I was thrown out of the berth—headfirst, descending towards what could have been a devastating fall.

And then… something inexplicable happened. My head struck against the opposite berth in a way that completely altered my fall, preventing what could have been a fatal impact. It was not forceful, not painful… just enough to stop the fall. A moment that could have led to an ICU, or worse, was transformed into a gentle interruption. I felt no pain. No injury. As if nothing had happened.

As the day unfolded, a deeper realisation dawned within me—what seemed like a simple incident carried layers beyond the visible. The impact that could have struck me with full force… felt as though it had been absorbed elsewhere. I came to know that Mohanji had experienced a sprain in the neck in the early hours, and the pain still lingers.

What appeared outwardly as a normal accident now revealed multiple dimensions—shock, awe, protection, and a mysterious healing touch that transcends logic.

I continued my day, completed my office work, and later arrived at Mohanji’s Home. Mimansa opened the door warmly and offered me food. As I stepped past the altar and took a piece of what she had prepared, the magnitude of the morning unfolded within me.

A question arose silently—
Where would I have been now? Would I even be here to receive this moment, this food, this breath?

I turned toward the altar. Looking at the Masters, my eyes welled up. Tears flowed—not from fear, but from a profound recognition. A silent acknowledgement of that unseen grace… that saving hand.

In that stillness, I remembered those powerful words that echo within:
“I am with you. When you are about to fall, I will intervene.”

And in that moment, it felt real. Alive. Certain. I saw the gentle, reassuring presence of Mohanji—his words reverberating within, his smile affirming what had just transpired.

Sitting there, in his space, I felt nothing but gratitude.
To every Master… to that unseen force… to the grace that allowed me to stand, breathe, and be.

Thank you, Mohanji.
