When Tears Become a Prayer

By Gurudas Mitra, Nagpur, India

A beautiful story of soul recognition — that certain connections transcend logic, time, and even lifetimes — illustrated through the tearful, wordless moment of connection with Mohanji.

The Soul Remembers

There are moments in life that cannot be explained through logic or reason. They arrive quietly, yet they transform us forever. In those rare moments, the heart recognizes something that the mind cannot fully comprehend—a connection that feels ancient, sacred, and deeply familiar. It is as if the soul remembers a bond that existed long before this lifetime. Such a moment unfolded for me when my eyes met those of Mohanji, and without warning, tears flowed from my eyes—not of sorrow, but of recognition.

“Did you notice the tears in my eyes when we looked at each other, Mohanji?” This question arose silently within me at that sacred moment. I felt certain that you had noticed, for you turned towards me once again. Perhaps this blessing became possible because the management had kindly allowed my wife and me to sit in the first row, right in front of you. In that brief exchange of glances, time seemed to pause, and an indescribable feeling filled my heart.

Yet, this was not the first time I had experienced such a wave of emotion. The first time occurred when I stood before your large photograph hanging on the temple wall in my daughter Piyali’s office room. As I gazed at that image, an unexpected surge of devotion arose within me, and tears gathered in my eyes. I wondered then, what is this feeling? Is it merely emotion, or is it something deeper—an inner attachment beyond the mind’s understanding?

The answer revealed itself later. It was during your address at Mohanji Datta Tapovan Ashram in Ganeshpuri, on the auspicious occasion of the celebration of your 61st birthday. Speaking to the gathering, you shared a profound truth: that all of us belong to one universal family. Through the endless cycles of birth and rebirth, souls meet, separate, and meet again. That is why, when we encounter certain souls, we feel an immediate closeness—a sense of recognition that transcends time. What a beautiful and unique realization that was.

Beyond Boundaries

When I turned around and looked behind me, I was astonished by the sight. A vast gathering had assembled—people from different corners of India and from many parts of the world. There were differences in language, culture, caste, race, and religion, yet in that sacred space, all such boundaries dissolved effortlessly. Smiles shone on their faces, reverence glowed in their eyes, and a shared vibration of love and togetherness filled the atmosphere as they offered their devotion at your feet. Humbly, I too place my pranams there.

The satsang—your teachings and affectionate interaction with all of us—became a fountain of wisdom. Each word carried the power to awaken deeper understanding, opening new dimensions in my perception of life and spirituality. Among the many highlights of the celebration was the presentation of “Dashavatar,” beautifully conceptualized and performed by the Himalayan School of Traditional Dance under the guidance of Radha. It was a remarkable artistic offering. Preparing artists from different parts of the world through online training alone seemed like a formidable challenge. Yet, through devotion, sincerity, faith, and dedicated guidance, the performance unfolded magnificently. Each artist poured their heart into the presentation, and every one of them deserves appreciation.

Another deeply moving moment was witnessing monks and revered Mathadhipatis arriving to greet you on your birthday. The presence of Sulakhe Maharaj carrying the sacred Paduka of Sai Baba filled the occasion with profound spiritual significance. For all of us present, it was a moment of immense pride and grace. Equally deserving of recognition are the many brothers and sisters who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Through their selfless service, dedication, and unwavering commitment, the entire celebration was conducted smoothly and became a grand success. Their efforts were a living example of karma yoga in action. I bow to them with deep respect.

Those two days at MDT were not merely days in a calendar. They were sacred moments gifted to us by grace—moments that will remain engraved in my heart forever. Thank you, Mohanji, for allowing us to experience such divine proximity. I pray that you continue to shower your blessings upon me and grant me the strength and opportunity to meet you again. Until that day arrives, I shall continue to cherish your teachings and your divine presence, through which I feel the blessings of Sai Baba, Datta Bhagawan, and my beloved Master Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

Finally, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to my daughter Piyali, especially to my wife Shibani, and to all those who helped me, in one way or another, to become part of this unforgettable spiritual gathering. These moments will remain as golden memories, illuminating my heart for the rest of my life. With Gratitude and Pranam to Mohanji.
